These vibrant blue dice glitter like a star-pocked night sky, yet peering through the shimmering cosmic dust reveals something far more ominous: unblinking, predatory eyes in striking shades of gold, crimson, and pale blue. Let’s name them Eyes of the Astral Stalker.
The Legend of the Astral Stalker
High above the Material Plane, floating within the silver void of the Astral Sea, hunts the Void Watcher—an ancient cosmic entity comprised of starlight, cold ether, and dozens of disparate, wandering eyes. Unlike the horrors of the Deep, the Watcher drifts unseen, blending seamlessly into nebulae and starfields, using its multi-hued gaze to peer across dimensions and track the fate of mortal adventurers.
Legend says an archmage attempted to channel the Watcher's omnipresence to foresee every outcome in a grand war. The spell backfired catastrophically. The mage was consumed by the void, but the magical feedback shattered seven of the Watcher’s spectral eyes. As they fell through the planes, the eyes gathered cosmic dust and shimmering starlight, crystallizing into sharp resinous vessels before hitting the ground.
The teal-green numbers were inked using liquid starlight mixed with the blood of an Astral Dreadnought, forever binding the cosmic gaze inside the dice.
Campaign Mechanics & Flavor
- Cosmic Awareness (Nat 20): When a critical success is rolled, the glitter inside the die catches the light like a bursting supernova, and the trapped eye appears to widen. The rolling player gains temporary truesight up to 30 feet for 1 minute as the Void Watcher grants them a slice of its vision.
- Watcher’s Glare (Nat 1): A critical failure causes the interior of the die to darken, making the trapped eye stare intently at the player. The overwhelming feeling of being scrutinized by a cosmic horror gives the player disadvantage on their next Wisdom saving throw.
- Unblinking Presence: When left on a table or in a dice vault, the eyes within the set always seem to settle face-up, steadily monitoring the room.
