With their misty green swirls, pops of bright orange-red, and deep metallic purple ink, these look like a mysterious relic from a poisonous wetland or Fey-touched bog. Let's call them The Viper’s Mire.
The Legend of the Viper’s Mire
Deep within the shifting, misty heart of the Witchwood lies a sunken grove known as the Viper’s Mire. Legend holds that a coven of green hags once bound an ancient primordial serpent beneath the glowing green waters, channeling its venomous magic to weave illusions and brew deadly concoctions.
When a rogue arcane scholar attempted to siphon the serpent’s power, the ritual collapsed, violently crystallizing the bog’s waters. The toxic green fumes, the serpent’s iridescent scales, and the crimson glow of the coven’s ritual fires were instantly trapped within seven sharp resinous stones.
Centuries later, an intrepid tinkerer carved the stones into dice, binding their dark fey energies into standard polyhedrals. The deep purple numbers were inked using the crushed venom sacs of shadow-vipers, sealing the volatile magic within.
Campaign Hooks & Mechanics
- Toxic Insight: When rolled in swampy terrain or during checks involving poisons, nature, or stealth, the swirl inside the dice appears to shift like rising mist.
- Venomous Strike (Nat 20): On a critical hit, the dice glow with a faint emerald radiance. The target must make a Constitution saving throw or take an additional 1d4 poison damage as phantom serpent fangs manifest for a split second.
- Mire’s Curse (Nat 1): A rolled natural 1 fills the air around the player with a faint sulfurous odor. The caster feels momentarily sluggish, suffering a -1 penalty to AC until the start of their next turn as swampy gloom clings to them.
